Spring Speaker: Nanotechnology
Tuesday, March 4, 2008
7:00 pm
219 Phillips Hall

Jennifer Weil, MS
Director of Education, Nanobiotechnology Center, Cornell University

What is all the buzz about Nanotechnology? Why is it used to sell diet drugs, to sheet sets, to automobiles? Learn about the history of nanotechnology, current activities in nanotech research at Cornell and the impact of nanotechnology in everyday life. Nanotechnology takes advantage of the physical properties of materials at the molecular-scale to fabricate new devices. The field is highly multidisciplinary in that the devices are built and used in fields as wide ranging as superconductors to medicine, and material science to plant pathology. The introduction of nanotechnology has impact on scientific ethics, science fiction, and education.

As director of education at the NBTC, Jennifer Weil's responsibilities include the multitude of programs to educate the public about nanotechnology. This is a wide ranging mandate thus her focus is on students (preK – 12th grade), undergraduates, and graduates. She also provides programming open to the public. The Nanobiotechnology Center is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Brief tours of Duffield Hall will follow the presentation and discussion. This event is free and open to the public.
